Electric Poultry Fencing: Complete Guide for Chickens, Ducks & Geese

Introduction

Free-ranging poultry is cheaper to feed, healthier, and produces better eggs and meat than confined birds. It also puts your flock directly in the middle of the food chain. Foxes, raccoons, mink, weasels, coyotes, stray dogs, hawks and rats all test a poultry run, and most of them do it at dawn, at dusk, or in the ten minutes you are not looking.

A fixed coop protects birds at night. The losses usually happen during the day, when the flock is out on grass and the only thing between them and a predator is a fence. Electric poultry fencing closes that gap. It is a lightweight, relocatable barrier that delivers a short, sharp pulse to anything that touches it — enough to teach a predator to go elsewhere, without injuring the animal or your birds.

Why poultry need electric fencing, not just a coop

Traditional poultry runs fail for three predictable reasons:

  • They are fixed. A permanent run is quickly stripped bare and becomes a parasite reservoir. Portable fencing lets you move birds to fresh ground every few days.
  • They are climbable. A 1.2 m wire mesh fence is a ladder for a fox, a mink or a raccoon. Netting with an electrified mesh is a barrier that bites back.
  • They are not psychological. A physical fence has to be perfect every night. An electric fence only has to be memorable once.

The predators that matter most for poultry are:

  • Ground predators — fox, raccoon, mink, weasel, badger, coyote, and above all the neighbour's dog, which is responsible for a large share of backyard losses.
  • Aerial predators — hawks, owls and eagles. Netting alone will not stop a hawk; you need either a covered run or good overhead cover for the birds to run under.
  • Rodents — rats and mice drawn to feed. An electrified perimeter around the feed and coop area reduces spillage losses and keeps rats from burrowing in.

How electric poultry netting works

Poultry netting is a mesh of UV-stabilised plastic strands with fine conductive filaments woven through it. The vertical posts are built into the net, usually every 2 to 3 metres, with a metal spike or step-in foot at the base. The netting is pre-tensioned, so a run goes up in minutes without tools.

The energizer connects to the conductive filaments in the net. The other side of the circuit — the earth or ground — runs back to a ground rod driven into the soil. When an animal touches the net while standing on damp ground, the circuit completes and it receives a short pulse. Nothing happens to a bird or person who touches the net while insulated from the ground, which is why a bird standing on dry straw inside the pen is not shocked.

Chickens, ducks and geese: what actually changes

Most poultry-fencing problems come from treating all three species the same. They are not.

Chickens

Chickens are the easiest of the three to fence and the most sensitive to a shock relative to their body size. The catch is feather insulation: contact has to happen at a bare part — comb, wattles, legs, or the thin skin around the face — which is reliable on a mesh fence and unreliable on a single strand.

  • Height: standard poultry netting at roughly 1.05–1.2 m contains most breeds. Light, flighty breeds may clear it; clipping one wing discourages this.
  • Mesh, not strands: use netting. Chicks and bantams walk straight through a two-strand wire fence.
  • Predator profile: fox, raccoon, mink and hawks. Reinforce corners, which is where foxes dig.

Ducks

Ducks are the hardest species to fence well, for one reason: water. Dense down and a waterproofed feather coat insulate them far better than chickens, so the pulse has to be stronger and the contact more reliable. Ducks also have a habit of leaning and pushing against a fence rather than walking into it.

  • Keep the bottom strand tight to the ground. A gap of more than a few centimetres becomes a duck-sized tunnel. Follow uneven ground with extra posts rather than letting the net bridge a hollow.
  • Never run netting through water. Fence the bank of the pond or the edge of the waterfowl area instead. Netting standing in water leaks current continuously and will kill the voltage on the whole run.
  • Expect higher load. Damp ground and wet netting increase leakage, so size the energizer up rather than down for ducks.
  • Bird welfare: leave enough room to get to water without drama, and never pen ducks so tightly that the only route to water is pressing through the fence.

Geese

Geese are large, strong and confident, and adult geese will often stand their ground against a fox. Their problem is mechanical, not psychological: they push fences over rather than through them.

  • Height and support: use the tallest netting available and add posts at closer intervals. A sagging fence is a push-over fence.
  • Ground clearance: goslings are small and slip through gaps, so check the base line weekly while birds are growing.
  • Predator profile: primarily fox and dogs. Geese are effective alarms, but an alarm is not a barrier.

Choosing the energizer: joules matter, "miles" mislead

Most energizer ratings on the box describe an ideal world: one clean bare wire, dry ground, no vegetation. Poultry netting is the opposite of that. It has dozens of conductive strands, a large surface area, and a bottom strand sitting in grass or on damp soil.

Power source: mains, battery or solar

The right choice depends on distance to power and how often you move the fence.

  • Mains (AC) — cheapest to run and always at full output. Best for a fixed poultry area near a building. Always feed it through an RCD-protected circuit and a correctly rated fuse.
  • 12V battery — the default for portable netting. No cable to trip over, and the energizer moves with the flock. Battery units need a spare battery and a routine charge cycle.
  • Solar — good for remote paddocks with no power, and self-maintaining in summer. Output depends on panel orientation and winter daylight, so check it more often in the cold months.

Grounding: the half of the circuit most people get wrong

An energizer does not shock an animal. It completes a circuit through the animal to the ground, and back to the energizer through the ground rod. If the grounding is poor, the fence can read full voltage on a tester and still give a bird-chasing fox almost nothing.

For poultry installations:

  • Use one to three ground rods, each driven at least 1.5 m (5 ft) into moist soil.
  • Drive rods into the dampest soil available, not into gravel or under a concrete apron.

Layout, height and gate access

  • Radius the corners. Right angles concentrate stress and pull the netting loose. A gentle curve holds tension far better and blocks the "cut the corner" escape route.
  • Follow the ground. Netting must touch the ground along its whole length. Add posts in hollows instead of letting the net bridge them.
  • Do not pen birds in a corner. Leave a clear escape route from any point in the run back to the coop. A bird that panics against a live fence learns the wrong lesson.
  • Gates. Either lift a netting panel and fold it back with an insulated handle, or install a proper insulated gate handle. Never step over a live net with wet boots.

Vegetation and wet weather

Two conditions cause most "my fence is weak" calls:

  • Grass contact. Strim or mow a 20–30 cm strip either side of the net before the season, then maintain it. If you cannot mow frequently, buy more joules.

Training the flock — and the predators

Birds learn fast. Most chickens, ducks and geese only contact a live fence once or twice before they treat it as a wall. A few practical points:

  • Turn the fence on before the birds go in. The first encounter should be the last one.
  • Check for trappable gaps. Any pocket between the net and the coop where a bird can be cornered is a welfare risk and must be closed.
  • Watch newly introduced birds. Young birds and birds from a non-electric system need a day or two of attention.
