This handheld electric fence tester and fault finder shows you what is actually happening on your fence line. It reads fence voltage, fence current and the direction of current flow on a large backlit LCD, so you can confirm a fence is live and then follow the line to the fault instead of walking it blind. It is suitable for all fence lines, including electric fence tape, polywire, net and rope, and it needs no ground wire: press the button, touch the probe to the fence and read the display.

What it reads

  • Fence voltage - shows the voltage present on the line, from 200 V up to 15000 V (0.2-15 kV).
  • Fence current - shows the current the fence line is drawing.
  • Direction of current flow - an arrow on the display shows which way the current is travelling.
  • Sound signal - gives an audible confirmation when a reading is taken.
  • Large LCD with backlight - the backlight keeps the readout visible when you are testing after dark.

Common questions

Does it need a ground wire?

No. The tester uses a back probe design, so you take a reading by touching the probe to the fence. There is no ground lead to set up and no separate earth stake to place.

What voltage range does it read?

It indicates voltage from 200 V up to 15000 V (0.2-15 kV), and shows the current and the direction of current flow at the same time.

Which fence types does it work on?

It is suitable for all fence lines, including electric fence tape, polywire, net and rope.

What battery does it use?

It runs on a 9 V battery, which is included with the tester.

How do I find a fault with it?

Take a reading on the live fence, then press the button and move along the fence line to locate the fault.

Comparable to Gallagher at a fraction of the price. Save yourself the time of hunting around your fence like a needle in a haystack and get yourself one of these!

Meh

This tester did work. Kinda. I loved the idea of only having to touch the wire without grounding and all the extra stuff, I wish it had been a little less of a pain. It would read the voltage (eventually) but each time I would have to touch the wire at least 5 times sometimes more before it would actually give me an accurate reading. I returned it because it just didn't work well enough for the price. I hope they make some upgrades and get it working better so I can buy another one in the future. I always need to test my horse fence.

Not intuitive

I feel like there's gotta be a more intuitive fence tester to use than this thing. It requires more setup than I would like, and I end up just using my less-techy fence tester so I get a reading fast and move on.Battery life is decent- I have had this for almost a year and haven't had to change the batteries. The display is large and very readable. It uses your hand as a ground, so you don't need to fiddle with a little ground rod that (often) can have wiring damage or get tangled. The voltage reading the tester gives me is similar to my less-techy tester, so I feel it is accurate when I can make sense of it.

Saved me a ton on buying a new energizer by easily finding the fault!

I installed a hot wire fence with a nice solar energizer. I was getting major drop off on voltage. I was almost ready to get a bigger plug in energizer. I saw this tester and gave it a shot. Worked like a charm. It points you towards the fault. Easy to use and saved me several hundred on buying a new energizer!
