Every Electric Fencing Term, Explained

Electric fencing has a vocabulary of its own, and most of it shows up on spec sheets and installation guides without explanation. This glossary covers the terms you'll actually meet when planning, buying or troubleshooting a fence. Bookmark it — it's the reference we link to from our other guides.

The Power Terms

  • Energizer / Fencer / Fence Charger / Fence Controller — the electrical device that produces energy and delivers it to the fence to control animals. "Energizer" and "charger" mean the same thing.
  • Joule — the unit of energy used to rate low-impedance energizers. 1 joule = 1 watt of power for 1 second. Think of it as the punch behind each pulse.
  • Voltage — electrical pressure. Voltage pushes current down the fence wire; the higher the voltage, the more current it can push through hair and hide.
  • Amperage — the measurement of electric current. Amperage is what you actually feel when shocked; higher amperage means a more intense shock.
  • Watt — measure of electrical power. Voltage × Amperage = Watts; Watts × Time = Joules.
  • Ohms — measure of resistance to current flow. A high ohms reading means a light fence load; a low ohms reading means a heavy load (weeds, long runs, wet conditions).
  • Alternating current (AC) — electricity from 110V/220V outlets; it cannot be stored. Energizers that deliver AC to the fence are called continuous-current chargers.
  • Direct current (DC) — electricity produced by batteries, which can be stored in a capacitor. Most energizers produce DC.
  • Capacitive discharge — how most energizers work: they store DC in an output capacitor before discharging it to the fence.
  • Low-impedance — an energizer type that increases its output energy as the fence load increases, delivering high-amperage shocks in very short pulses. The standard for modern livestock fencing.
  • Solid-state — solid-state chargers deliver medium-amperage shocks in medium pulses; best for shorthaired livestock, small animals and pets in light weed conditions.
  • Battery charger — an energizer powered by a 6V or 12V battery, for remote areas without a 110V outlet; often paired with a solar panel to recharge.

The Fence Line Terms

  • High tensile — an affordable, long-lasting electrified fence system, an excellent choice for permanent perimeters. Requires braced wood corner/end posts plus special insulators, hardware and tools that maintain constant high tension on the metal wire.
  • Insulator — keeps the electrified wire from touching posts or anything else that would drain current. Usually plastic or porcelain — see our insulator guide for the ceramic vs porcelain choice.
  • Ground rod — the metal stake driven into soil that completes the circuit; it picks up electricity moving through the earth back to the charger.
  • Ground rod clamp — connects the ground wire from the charger to the ground rod.
  • Ground system — the electrical path back to the charger, usually earth-ground rods in the soil. A weak ground system is the number-one cause of weak fences — see our grounding guide.
  • Hook-up wire — insulated wire rated 20,000 volts or more, used to make fence connections without voltage loss.
  • Line posts — posts that support the fence line; they carry far less tension than corner posts and can be metal, wood, plastic or fiberglass.
  • Corner posts — heavily braced posts that absorb the pull of a taut fence line; usually wood, set deep.
  • Splicer — joins separate strands of wire without breaking the electrical circuit.
  • Tensioner — tightens fence wires (typically polytape) to increase tension on a section of line.

The Fence System Terms

  • Permanent fence — a multi-strand, well-braced fence, traditionally barbed or woven wire, now usually electrified high-tensile.
  • Portable / temporary fence — an electric fence that is easily moved — the backbone of rotational grazing.
  • Rotational grazing — allowing livestock to graze in small paddocks divided by temporary fences, moving them frequently so vegetation regrows. Usually one strand at 40 inches or at the animal's nose level.
  • Controlled grazing — the broader practice of managing forage with grazing animals, usually by subdividing pasture with electric fencing and moving livestock frequently.

Putting It Together
