How to Protect Your Electric Fence from Lightning (and Keep Your Energizer Alive)
Lightning is the number one killer of electric fence energizers. A single strike on the fence line can send thousands of volts back through the wire, bypassing the internal protection of even the best energizers and frying the electronics.
You cannot stop lightning, but you can give it a faster, easier path to the ground that does not involve your energizer. In this guide, we cover the three essential steps to lightning-proofing your setup.
1. Use a Lightning Diverter (Arrestor)
A lightning diverter is your first line of defence. It is a simple device installed between the fence and the energizer. It contains a small gap that the high-voltage pulse from a lightning strike can jump across to reach a dedicated ground rod.
Under normal operation, the fence pulse (around 5,000–10,000V) is not strong enough to jump the gap. When lightning hits (millions of volts), it easily jumps the gap and goes straight to the earth, protecting your energizer.
2. Install an Inductor (Choke Coil)
Lightning travels in very fast, high-frequency waves. An inductor — essentially a coil of fence wire — acts as a 'speed bump'. It resists the rapid flow of lightning, forcing it toward the diverter, while allowing the normal fence pulse to pass through relatively easily.
For best results, install the diverter before the inductor (on the fence side). This 'traps' the lightning and gives it no choice but to exit through the diverter.
3. The Importance of Dedicated Grounding
A lightning diverter is only as good as its ground rod. **Do not connect your lightning diverter to the same ground rods used by your energizer.**
If you use the same ground, the lightning strike can travel 'up' from the ground rods into the energizer's earth terminal, causing the very damage you are trying to prevent. Your lightning ground rod should be at least 15 metres (50 feet) away from your energizer ground system.
Lightning Protection Checklist
- Diverter: Installed at the point where the lead-out wire meets the fence.
- Inductor: 6–10 loops of wire (about 30cm diameter) between the diverter and the energizer.
- Dedicated Ground: At least one 2-metre galvanised ground rod, 15m away from the main system.
- Check after storms: Inspect the diverter for scorch marks or damage after any major electrical storm.
What to Do During a Severe Storm
If a severe lightning storm is directly overhead, the safest option is to physically disconnect the energizer from both the fence and the power source (mains or battery). A disconnected energizer cannot be fried by a surge coming through the wires.
