Summer is winding down — and so is the season for easy fence fixes. Cooler temperatures, shorter daylight and heavier wildlife movement all put new stress on your electric fence. Once the ground freezes, every repair gets twice as hard, and a fence that limps through fall will fail completely in January.

1. Trim Back Vegetation Before It Dies Down

Dying weeds and vines droop onto the wire as they dry out, turning your fence into a ground rod. Walk the line and cut back anything touching the wire — including grass that will fall over after the first frost. A few minutes with a trimmer now prevents a constant drain on your energizer all winter.

2. Re-Earth the Grounding System Before the Ground Freezes

Grounding is where most fence failures happen, and it gets worse in winter: frozen, dry soil is a poor conductor. Check that your ground rods are still driven deep and that the clamp connections are tight and corrosion-free. If your fence has ever felt weak in dry weather, add a second or third rod now — it is far easier before the frost line drops.

3. Check Wire Tension for Temperature Shrink

Fall brings big temperature swings, and wire contracts as it cools. Tension that was perfect in July can now be pulling hard on corner posts and insulators — or sagging low enough to touch vegetation. Walk the lines, adjust tensioners, and look for wires that have pulled loose from their clips.

4. Inspect Insulators for Summer UV Damage

After a full summer of sun, insulators can crack, chalk or weaken — and a cracked insulator lets voltage leak straight into the post. Listen for a faint "clicking" sound near posts: that is voltage jumping to ground. Replace any damaged units before they fail silently. If you're re-fitting a line, screw-in ring insulators (50 or 100 packs) make replacement quick without hammering nails.

5. Test Voltage at the Farthest Point

Use a fence tester to measure voltage at the point furthest from the energizer — the far end is where problems show first. You should see at least 3,000V–4,000V for cattle and 4,000V–5,000V for sheep or goats. If it reads low, work backwards: shorts, bad connections, or a failing unit. 6. Service the Battery & Solar Panel for Shorter Days

Daylight is shrinking fast, and solar units will be working on less charge every week. Wipe the panel clean of grime and bird droppings, check battery health, and make sure the unit's charge indicator matches reality. If your battery has seen two or more seasons, consider a fresh one before the short, grey days of winter arrive.

7. Brace for Fall Wildlife Pressure

Autumn is when deer and bears push hardest — moving to winter ranges, fattening up, and testing fences they ignored all summer. Check fence height where it matters, reinforce weak corners, and fix gaps under the bottom wire. A fence that held in July can be tested hard in October.

8. Check Connections & Corrosion Before the Wet Season

Winter wet and freeze-thaw cycles attack every joint. Inspect the jumper leads between your energizer and the fence and ground lines: cracked insulation, corroded crocodile clips and loose clamps all waste voltage. Clean contact points and replace worn leads now, not in a snowstorm.
