Spring Electric Fence Maintenance Checklist: 8 Checks Before the Season Starts

As the grass starts growing, your electric fence needs to be at its best. Winter weather, fallen branches, and shifting ground can all create 'leaks' that drain your voltage just when you need to keep livestock contained in fresh pastures.

Use this 8-step checklist to ensure your fence is ready for the season.

1. Inspect the Energizer

Check for any signs of pest damage (mice nesting in the casing) and ensure the connections to the fence and ground are tight and corrosion-free.

2. Check Battery Health

For solar or battery units, ensure the battery is holding a charge. If it’s been sitting all winter, it may need a deep charge or replacement.

3. Test the Grounding System

Grounding is where most fence failures happen. Ensure the ground rods haven't been pushed out by frost heave and that the wire connecting them is secure. If the soil is very dry, you may need to add an extra rod.

4. Walk the Line

Physically walk your fence lines. Look for fallen branches, sagging wires, or insulators that have popped off. Clear any vegetation that is touching the wire.

5. Check for Broken Poly Strands

If you use poly wire or tape, look for areas where the thin metal conductors have snapped. One break can significantly reduce voltage further down the line.

6. Inspect Insulators

Cracked or UV-damaged insulators can allow power to leak into the posts. Listen for a 'clicking' sound — that’s the sound of voltage jumping to the ground.

7. Test Voltage at the Far End

Use a fence tester to check the voltage at the furthest point from the energizer. You should see at least 3,000V–4,000V for cattle and 4,000V–5,000V for sheep or goats.

8. Clean Solar Panels

For solar energizers, wipe down the panel with a damp cloth to remove winter grime and bird droppings. Maximum sunlight equals maximum power.
