Electric Fencing for Pigs: Setup, Joule Needs & Containment Tips

Ask anyone who keeps pigs and they'll tell you the same thing: a pig is smarter than the fence you put in front of it — until it isn't. Pigs are strong enough to bulldoze a poorly-built barrier, clever enough to find the one weak corner, and born with an instinct to root under anything that sits on the ground.

Yet for all that, pigs are also among the easiest animals to hold with electric fencing. They have sensitive, hairless snouts — the perfect antenna for a training shock — and once they learn the fence means business, they rarely test it again.

This guide covers the three questions every pig keeper asks: how many strands and at what height, how much power you need, and how to train pigs so escapes stop happening.

Why Electric Fencing Works for Pigs

Unlike cattle or horses, pigs don't need a fence they can lean on. They need a fence that teaches. An electric fence delivers a memorable lesson to the snout — the one part of a pig that is always investigating the world — and pigs have excellent long-term memory for unpleasant experiences.

Electric fencing also suits the way pigs are managed:

  • It's portable. Pigs destroy pasture and ground quickly, so most keepers move them on a rotation. Temporary electric fences move in minutes.
  • It's cheap per metre. Pig fencing needs more frequent replacement than cattle fencing if you use physical mesh; electric line costs a fraction of it.
  • It protects the ground. You can fence off wet areas, tree roots, and garden beds so pigs can't root where they shouldn't.

How Many Strands and at What Height?

Pig fencing is a low fence. A pig's nose is near the ground, and a pig's back is not very high — so you don't need a tall fence, you need a low, well-spaced one.

Adult pigs — 3 strands:

The bottom strand does the real work: it sits at snout height, stops rooting attempts, and catches piglets. The middle and top strands stop a pig from pushing through between lines.

Weaners and piglets — 2 strands: bottom at 15–20 cm (6–8 in) and top at 30–40 cm (12–16 in). Keep the voltage up — small pigs have less body mass and need a clear, sharp signal.

Electric netting is a strong alternative for pigs: it combines vertical strands with a bottom line at ground level, which pigs read as a solid barrier. It's the easiest option for breeders with piglets and for short-term paddocks.

What Wire to Use

  • Polywire or polytape on step-in posts is the standard for temporary pig paddocks — light, quick to move, and easy to see.
  • Steel wire suits permanent boundary lines that will stay in place for years.
  • Never electrify barbed wire or use materials pigs can entangle in — pigs push hard and will tear skin on barbed wire.

How Much Power Do You Need?

Two things matter: voltage (the strength of the lesson) and joules (how far the pulse travels and how well it copes with load).

  • Voltage: aim for 3,000–4,500 V at the fence line. Pigs feel a clean shock at the snout very well — you don't need extreme voltage, but it must be consistent along the whole fence.
  • Joules: match the energizer to the total fence length and vegetation load. A short, clean paddock runs happily on a smaller unit; a long boundary or a line that fights summer weeds needs more joules. Our joule sizing guide gives you the numbers.

Grounding is everything. Pigs are held by a circuit: energizer → wire → pig → soil → earth rods → back to the energizer. If the earth system is weak (shallow rods, dry or sandy soil), the shock fades and pigs learn the fence is a suggestion. When in doubt, add more ground rods — or run an earth return wire so the pig must touch two wires at once.

The Training Trick That Stops Escapes

Pigs learn the fence in one or two contacts — but only if the first contact is a proper lesson. Here's the reliable sequence:

  1. Turn pigs in during daylight. They need to see what stung them.
  2. Let them investigate. Don't chase them off the wire. The first pig to touch the fence with its snout does the teaching for the whole group — the others watch and learn without ever touching it.
  3. Keep them calm. A stressed pig that panics may crash through once; after that it knows the fence hurts and that it can break it. A calm pig that takes one clean shock simply never tries again.
  4. Watch the first 24 hours. Check the fence line twice the first day — a sagging bottom strand under a determined rooter is the most common escape route.
  5. Re-check after every move. Pigs re-test fences in new locations. A strong fence in a new paddock usually needs no re-training; a weak one will be found within hours.

A note on boars and sows: a large boar or a sow protecting piglets can be single-minded. If you're housing a full-grown boar, don't rely on two strands of polywire — use three strands of sturdy line or electric netting, keep the voltage at the top of the range, and consider a physical anchor line where the boar is known to test.
