Grazing the same pasture the same way every year is the fastest way to turn good grass into bare dirt. Rotational grazing — moving livestock through a series of smaller paddocks so each one gets time to recover — is the fix. And the tool that makes it practical is the temporary electric fence: cheap, light, and movable in minutes.

Why Rotational Grazing Works

  • Healthier pasture. Plants get a rest period, regrow stronger, and hold soil better.
  • More grazing per acre. Focused grazing uses grass more efficiently than letting animals pick over a huge field.
  • Better manure distribution. Waste spreads across paddocks instead of piling up at waterers and gates.

Setting Up Your First Rotation System

Step 1: Build (or reuse) a permanent boundary

The outside perimeter should be permanent — steel wire on solid posts, powered by a mains or high-output energizer. This is the backbone that carries power to your temporary lines.

Step 2: Divide the pasture into paddocks

Start simple: split the field into 3–5 paddocks with temporary cross-fences. For small farms, 3 paddocks is already a big improvement over one continuous field. As you get comfortable, add more paddocks for longer recovery periods.

Step 3: Run power to the temporary lines

Connect the temporary polywire to the live perimeter with a proper connector or gate handle. Every temporary line must be electrically continuous back to the energizer — a broken splice means an uncharged line, and livestock find it within hours.

Step 4: Set the grazing density

A good starting point for cattle is 1–3 days per paddock, depending on grass growth. The goal: livestock eat the top of the grass, not the roots. Move them when grazed down to roughly 7–10 cm (3–4 in), not when the paddock looks "cleaned out."

Step 5: Move the fence, not the animals

Moving day looks like this:

  1. Roll up the polywire behind the animals and pull the step-in posts.
  2. Walk the new line ahead of them and push posts in at 3–5 m intervals.
  3. String the wire, connect it, and test voltage at the far end.

Strip grazing is rotational grazing with a daily move — a narrow strip of fresh pasture is opened every day with a single polywire line. It is the most efficient way to use grass and the simplest system to manage: one line, one reel, one move per day. Sheep and cattle both adapt to strip grazing within a day or two.

Winter and Rotation: What Changes

Rotation does not stop when it snows — it just changes. Frozen ground makes step-in posts hard to push, and snow hides wires. Two rules for cold-season rotation:

  • Mark wires with flagging tape so they stay visible over snow.

Common Beginner Mistakes

  • Overgrazing before moving. If animals are eating plants to the roots, move them sooner. Grass recovers from the top down.
  • Broken connections. A loose splice or a gate handle left open kills the charge on the whole line. Test after every move.

  • Forgetting water. Livestock need water in every paddock or a short lane back to the main water source. A thirsty herd will push through any fence.

For most farms, yes — even a simple 3-paddock rotation pays for itself within a season through better grass utilization and lower feed bills. The upfront cost is small: a few reels of polywire, a set of step-in posts, and a portable energizer you may already own. The payoff is pasture that keeps producing, year after year.
