An electric fence charger — also called an energizer, fencer or pulser — converts mains, battery or solar power into the short, high-voltage pulses that make an electric fence work.
Two numbers decide which one you need: the total length of fence you are powering, and how much vegetation will be touching it. Sizing by fence length and weed load matters far more than sizing by how many animals you keep.
LIFEALL energizers run from 0.5J for small runs and strip grazing up to 15.5J for long multi-strand perimeters, in three power formats:
- AC mains — for paddocks near a power point; no battery to service.
- 12V battery — for paddocks and rotational grazing away from buildings.
- Solar — self-contained units for remote blocks with no mains access.
Every unit below works with polywire, polyrope, tape and netting, and ships with a lead set. Not sure which size you need? Start with our joule sizing guide, then check how far an energizer can actually power.
Choose by output
| Output | Typical job | Stated max coverage | Example model |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.5 J | Solar sites, small paddocks, strip grazing | 20 miles / 32 km | 20 Miles Solar Charger |
| 1.5–3 J | Small farms, rotational grazing | Up to 12 km | P8 |
| 2 J | Yards and small paddocks | 6–10 km | A605 · XSD-260 series |
| 9 J | Long lines, heavy vegetation, bear country | Not stated | A740 |
| 15.5 J | Large perimeters, multi-strand, high weed load | 80 km | Q70B |
Stated coverage is the manufacturer's claimed figure under light weed load. Real range falls with vegetation, soil type and the number of strands — measure your own fence line before ordering.
Frequently asked questions
Is a fence charger the same as an energizer?
Yes. "Charger", "energizer", "fencer" and "pulser" all describe the same unit — the box that generates the pulse. The name varies by region and brand.
How many joules do I need?
Size by the total length of fence connected at once, and by how much grass will touch the bottom strand — not by the number of animals. A short, clean run needs far fewer joules than a long perimeter through pasture.
Can one energizer power several paddocks?
Yes, but connecting everything to a single unit means one fault takes the whole property down. Splitting the farm into two or three zones costs a little more and tells you where a problem is.
Will a solar energizer keep working in winter?
Output drops as days shorten and panels are shaded. Plan headroom, keep the panel clear, and check the battery before the season you rely on most. See our solar energizer maintenance guide.
Do I need to ground the energizer?
Always. The pulse has to return through the soil, so the earth side is half the system. Poor grounding is the most common cause of a weak fence — see how to earth an electric fence.
